iDiS PEARL

What is the PEARL?

The PEARL (Prompt Evidence Assessment and Review of Literature) was designed to give busy practitioners a rapid, clinically relevant summary of important new published papers or studies presented at major conferences that have the potential to change practice. iDiS has synthesized the papers into a concise summary that highlights the most important findings and their implications for treatment. Like all of iDiS's work, it is not connected in any way to any pharmaceutical company, and is supported by the Pennsylvania Department of Aging, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, and the Washington, D.C. Department of Health.

The PEARLs

  • ACCORD Rapid Update--discusses 2 papers published in March 2010 in NEJM concerning diabetes care
  • PPI Use and Fractures--discusses the recent FDA revision for prescription and over-the-counter labels for proton pump inhibitors about a possible increased risk of fractures with use
  • Cardiovascular Risk with Supplemental Calcium--reviews a recent meta-analysis which suggested that calcium supplements may increase the risk of myocardial infarction and other cardiovascular events, and provides guidance for patient care based on the findings
  • Rosiglitazone warning--discusses the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) recent decision to restrict the use of rosiglitazone to patients already taking it, or those who cannot achieve glycemic control with other medications and choose not to take pioglitazone.
